The Boston Chart House which opened in 1973, is housed in the original four-story Gardiner Building, which was originally built in 1763. This historic building also served as the office to Thomas Hancock and, subsequently, his nephew John Hancock, often referred to as "Hancock's Counting House." It is the oldest building on Long Wharf which contains many of its original fixtures and decor such as Hancock's original safe, broad wooden beams, floors, red brick walls, and staircase.
